Fort Gaines Alabama

Fort Gains | Dauphin Island, Alabama

Fort Gaines, situated on Dauphin Island along Mobile Bay, played a pivotal role for the South during the Civil War. The fort has protected the entrance to Mobile Bay for over 150 years. Today, this historic site stands at the eastern tip of Dauphin Island, offering sweeping views of the bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Unfortunately, ongoing shoreline erosion has led to its recent designation as one of the Eleven Most Endangered Historic Sites in America.
